Start with:
Release order
When Unknown Worlds shipped each chapter—Subnautica 1.0 (January 2018) after years of Steam Early Access, then Subnautica: Below Zero 1.0 (May 2021). Early access start dates and console ports are optional—not separate must-play titles.
- Newcomers → Subnautica (2018) then Below Zero (2021)—same order for release and story
- Below Zero alone is possible but spoils/weakens Subnautica mysteries
- Historian → note Early Access 2014/2019 in FAQ—not separate story chapters
- Console → both on Switch, PS4/5, Xbox—check current store bundles
Story order tips
One Alterra universe on Planet 4546B: Subnautica (Ryley Robinson in the main crash zone) → Below Zero (Robin in arctic Sector Zero). Release and story order match—play Subnautica first for Kharaa bacterium and Degasi lore payoff in Below Zero.
- Core arc: Subnautica → Below Zero—4546B quarantine and Alterra threads continue
- Subnautica is survival-horror ocean exploration; Below Zero adds cold biomes and land segments
- Subnautica 2 is upcoming—optional as of June 2026
- On Story order, Below Zero may be hidden—reveal when ready or use Show all spoilers

FAQ
Release vs story order, Below Zero placement, early access dates, and what's next.
Release order
For Subnautica they align: Subnautica (2018) → Subnautica: Below Zero (2021). Release order tracks US 1.0 launch dates; story order follows Planet 4546B fiction—Ryley's crash-zone survival first, then Robin's Sector Zero expedition. No prequel shuffle like Red Dead or BioShock.
Play Subnautica to completion, then Below Zero. Both are on Steam and modern consoles—often discounted together. Allow 25–40 hours for Subnautica, 15–25 for Below Zero. Use wikis sparingly; discovery is the point. Finish Subnautica before reading deep Below Zero lore guides.
Story & lore
Strongly yes for story order. Below Zero references Kharaa, Alterra, Precursors, and events from the first game. Unknown Worlds marketed Below Zero as playable standalone, but you lose mystery and emotional payoff. Release order and story order both say Subnautica first.
Below Zero started as an expansion then became a separate game with Robin as protagonist in Sector Zero—different map, new story. It does not reuse Ryley's save. You can play it alone, but Subnautica spoilers and missing context hurt the experience. Treat it as a sequel, not a substitute.
Unknown Worlds announced Subnautica 2—optional, no firm release date as of June 2026. It continues the franchise after Below Zero. This page covers shipped 1.0 releases through Below Zero; Subnautica 2 gets a release-order title when dated.
